This is the Week to Talk to Congress (w/ Poll)

Mon May 29, 2006 at 08:56:16 PM PDT

This week, Congress is on what we euphamistically call a "district work period." This means that the Members of Congress will be back in their districts for the whole week. If you're getting frustrated from writing letters that get canned answers or posting blogs about your pet issue that don't seem to change anything, take this week to try to get a meeting with your Member of Congress.
Its quite easy, look up your Member's "district office" and ask to speak to the scheduler. Explain that you're a constituent and you'd like to meet with the Congressman about XX issue this week. If you're lucky, you'll be able to schedule a meeting.

While you may have to see a staff member instead, either way, these meetings can actually make a difference. Ask if you might be able just to say hi for to the Member for a minute or if they have any public events that week.

Either way, be courteous, be knowledgeable, treat them like any person you're trying to convince. Developing a good relationship is the best way to make sure you can actually talk to the Congressman next time around.

All too often, people think they have to come to DC for a meeting and get dissapointed if they're interrupted by votes or the Member is just overscheduled. Take advantage of recesses for an eaisier opportunity.

Best of luck!
